When you have a health problem you go to your doctor who will then redirect you to the right specialist (cardiologist for heart, gastroenterologist for stomach, urologist for urinary, gynecologist for reproductive system, psychologist for emotional issues etc.)
You then go to that specialist who will then look at that specific part of your body, basically ignoring all the rest.
This is exactly why traditional western medicine does not work, because it just focus on symptoms and only in a specific area. How could it be that simple if we are such complex and unique creatures?
An holistic approach is what we really need, no matter what the problem is, an holistic approach looks at our health as a whole, keeping into consideration various aspects of our life.
You can have the healthiest diet, exercise everyday but if other areas of your life are not in balance, then your health may be unstable. I experienced it myself for many years, exercising everyday, eating an average healthy diet but still with many health issues, the main one of which was infertility.
The Institute of Integrative Nutrition taught us that there are 2 types of foods: Primary and Secondary (I love the concept!)
The Primary food is actually all those areas mentioned in the image above, which are essential for our health.
The Secondary Food is what we eat and drink, of course very important but useless if there is no harmony with the rest. Shocking, isn’t it? Still, if you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. There are tons of cases of people eating healthy but still getting seriously ill or never smoking and getting lung cancer. How is that possible? Well, it happens because our nutrition depends on much more than just food.
We nourish ourselves through the thoughts we think, the feelings we feel, the air we breath, the relationships we have …. Our health depends on the balance among these different areas of our life.
That’s why when I work with a client we look at these areas, Social Life, Joy, Spirituality, Creativity, Finances, Career, Education, Health, Physical activity, Home Cooking, Home Environment, Relationships. They are part of the Circle of Life created by The Institute of Integrative Nutrition (IIN) (see picture), they belong to Primary Foods and are as important as the food we eat.
As an IIN Health Coach, I am trained to help my clients reach their goals in all these areas and create the balance they need to have a bright and long lasting health.
I am specialized in Fertility, Pregnancy and Postpartum because that is where I struggled for many years and I feel the need to help others make their journey to parenthood easier and shorter. I wish I had a health coach guiding me through the mess I was while struggling with my fertility issues!
